Planting Your Trees - A How-To Guide
Follow these step-by-step instructions to get your new trees off to a good start.
Before you start
Call before you dig! At least three days before you plan to start digging, call your area one-call service to have underground service lines marked.
After the area has been approved for planting, choose the location for your new tree, and purchase an appropriate species at your local garden center or tree nursery.
Step 1
Dig a hole two to three times as wide as the rootball and as deep as the rootball.
Step 2
Gently place the tree in the hole. Handle the tree by the rootball only.
Step 3
Once you make sure the tree is placed straight and upright, remove the container or cut back the burlap and backfill the hole with dirt. Tamp the dirt down lightly as you go to remove air pockets.
Step 4
Add two to three inches of mulch around the tree. Push the mulch away from the trunk to prevent rot and insect damage.
Step 5
Water thoroughly, and make sure the tree gets one inch of water per week (including rain water). An easy guideline to remember is five, one-gallon milk jugs full of water each week.
